Council members take Waddell cost increase in stride
Lexington City Council members said they are happy with the final design of a new Waddell Elementary School. The Council would like to minimize the tax burden on residents. But members of the Council said investing more in the infrastructure now would mean fewer expenses on improvements in the future.

County school policies under review
New leaders in the Rockbridge County school district are turning fresh eyes to old policies. The school board is reviewing many of its major programs and procedures, including a 25-year-old contract with the city of Lexington. Laurie Strong and Kevin Brooks are new to the six-member county school board this year.

Lexington schools propose catch-up raises for teachers
Lexington City Schools released a proposed budget this week that will include catch-up raises for teachers. Superintendent Dan Lyons says the city wants to make up increases it missed during the recession of 2008-2009. Numbers for the final budget ultimately depend on the budget passed by the General Assembly at the end of its current session.

Unicycles come to Central Elementary
Now in its second year, the READY program at Central Elementary School continues to provide students with tutoring and enrichment. Principal Ryan Barber says the school is committed to offering engaging workshops as well as academic help. In one of them, students learn to ride unicycles. The program is funded by a three-year grant from the state.

School lunches costing Lexington $25,000 a year
With an $11.2 million bill on the horizon for Lexington’s new Waddell Elementary School, City Council member Frank Friedman has an idea to spend money more efficiently: restructuring the school district’s cafeteria system. But addressing the $25,000-yearly losses in cafeteria operations is trickier than expected because of regulations imposed by the state of Virginia.

High Waddell bids shock Lexington School Board
Bids for the Waddell building project came in on Monday at more than $2 million higher than what the Lexington School Board had expected. Five contractors submitted bids ranging from $14.3 million to just over $16 million. Lexington School Board Chair Leslie Straughan said she was both shocked and confused by the size of the bids.

Council raises borrowing limit for Waddell
Lexington City Council voted to increase by $1 million its advertised bond amount for a new Waddell Elementary School during a special work session Monday. The adjustment comes one week after the Lexington School Board received bids for the project that were more than $2 million higher than its architect’s estimate.

Winter storms and consolidation put snag in Rockbridge County Schools transportation
Every weekday, more than 1,600 students ride buses throughout , requiring nearly 50 different bus routes to shuttle them to and from school. County schools propose 7.5 percent budget increase
The Rockbridge County School Board voted Monday to ask county supervisors to approve a $28.6 million budget for 2014-15. That’s an increase of almost $2 million over this year. School officials say they will need the $28.6 million to fund six categories of spending. But Monday’s estimate shows a $400,000 gap between estimated revenues and expenditures.

Laying down the law: Maury River Middle School educates students on Virginia code
When Tasha Polly, a physical education and health teacher at Maury River Middle School, heard one of her seventh grade students speaking incorrectly about Virginia law and the consequences imposed on minors, she asked School Resource Officer Chris Norris to step in. “I overheard the student saying things like, ‘Oh it doesn’t matter what happens to me because my record will just get wiped when I’m 18,’” Polly said.

Revised price tag for Waddell still tops $11 million
The final estimate for the cost of building a new Waddell Elementary School was updated last week. The design committee still expects the project to total more than $11 million. But a storm water control grant and funds from the school board’s technology budget have provided some relief. The Rockbridge Report is the only local news Web site and television broadcast for the Lexington, Buena Vista and Rockbridge community and has been since 1985.

Student testing could face changes
Rockbridge area school administrators and teachers said they are encouraged by talk of standardized testing reform in Richmond. Earlier this month, two delegates introduced legislation that would reduce the number of Standards of Learning tests required of students in Virginia. Students must take 34 SOL tests, beginning in third grade and continuing through high school.

W&L’s SAE chapter suspended
Washington and Lee University’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon was suspended last week and its 57 current members have lost membership privileges. The fraternity’s national headquarters issued the suspension, citing health and safety violations, in an online statement published Thursday afternoon. In the statement, SAE headquarters said it closed one its of its oldest chapters because its actions didn’t represent the fraternity’s mission.

Krysta is a New Jersey native who has continued to make her way South since enrolling at Washington and Lee University. After graduating in 2016, she moved from Virginia to Charlotte, NC, to pursue a career in finance and communications. Krysta is a fitness instructor and motivator, social media manager, and corporate communications strategist.
